STUDY TO EMPLOYMENT

F-1 students and Optional Practical Training

Build the timeline across the DSO recommendation, SEVIS record, Form I-20, Form I-765, EAD, employment reporting, travel and any status transition.

Build an F-1 and OPT timeline before a deadline builds it for you

F-1 status, practical training and employment authorization are connected, but they are not the same thing. A DSO recommendation, SEVIS record, Form I-20, Form I-765 and Employment Authorization Document each serve a different function. Build the timeline before accepting work, traveling or changing employers.

Start with your current stage

  • Enrolled and considering CPT or pre-completion OPT
  • Approaching program completion and preparing post-completion OPT
  • OPT pending with USCIS
  • OPT approved and employment beginning
  • STEM extension planning or pending
  • Moving toward H-1B or another status

How do CPT and OPT differ?

CPT is curricular training authorized by the designated school official and shown on Form I-20. OPT is employment authorization related to the student’s major: the DSO recommends it, while USCIS adjudicates Form I-765 and issues the EAD. Twelve months or more of full-time CPT can eliminate OPT eligibility at that educational level. Confirm the school’s program requirements with the DSO.

What should you check before filing OPT?

Confirm the program-completion date, requested start date, filing window, DSO recommendation date, correct Form I-765 eligibility category, identity documents, fee and filing method. Keep the complete submitted packet and its delivery or online confirmation. Form editions and instructions change; use the current USCIS Form I-765 instructions.

What should you do while OPT is pending?

Track receipt notices, address changes and any request for evidence. A pending application is not employment authorization. Do not begin OPT employment before the EAD authorizes it and the authorized start date has arrived. Travel during a pending case needs separate planning.

Which employment records should you keep?

Employment must relate to the major. Keep a dated explanation connecting duties to coursework, plus offer letters, job descriptions, supervisor details, hours, pay records and start and end dates. Report required changes through the school and SEVP process on time. Track unemployment days using actual dates rather than estimates.

What needs a separate STEM OPT review?

A qualifying STEM extension adds a separate eligibility layer: a qualifying degree and school, an E-Verify employer, timely filing, Form I-983 training plan, compensation and bona fide employer supervision, validations and evaluations. Material changes may require an updated Form I-983 and school reporting. Confirm current requirements before changing the worksite, hours, duties, employer or corporate structure.

When should travel or a status transition be reviewed?

Travel, cap-gap, a change of status, transfer to another school or program, and a pending STEM extension can affect the record differently. Review the SEVIS record, Form I-20, visa, EAD, employment evidence and every pending filing before departure or a job change.
