Travel During OPT: Re-entry Checklist and FAQs

Can I travel during OPT?
International travel depends on your application stage, documents, employment and immigration record. Discuss the proposed departure and return dates with your designated school official (DSO) before booking. A complete document file does not guarantee admission.

What should I check after OPT approval?
ICE travel guidance identifies the EAD, travel-endorsed Form I-20, valid passport and visa, and an employment letter where available. Confirm your SEVIS record and the travel endorsement with the DSO. A travel signature does not replace a visa.

What if OPT is still pending?
Ask the DSO and counsel how a decision or request for evidence while abroad would affect your return. Plan how you would obtain the EAD if OPT is approved during the trip; review the current ICE instructions before departure.

What if OPT has ended or another filing is pending?
Do not assume that a period allowed for departure, a receipt notice or continued status permits re-entry or employment. Your I-94, filing route, decision notices and applicable rules need individual review. For a transition to employer sponsorship, see the OPT to H-1B transition guide.

Prepare a travel review file
Organize your passport and visa, I-20s, EAD or pending-case notices, employment letter, pay records, travel dates and DSO contact details. Keep your OPT and EAD records consistent with your timeline.

Official guidance and next step
Read the ICE/SEVP student travel guidance and ask the DSO or immigration counsel which instructions apply to your circumstances.
